I'm beyond stoked to share that we've promoted [Nate Bek](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAChwJ5oBlbmhFvtAHyUqjvfiUUPrgE5SYtI) to Senior Associate and Head of Content at [Ascend](https://www.linkedin.com/company/ascend-venture-capital/).
In less time than it takes most startups to burn through their pre-seed round, Nate has:
connected with over 1,000 founders
✍✍✍ published more than 100 blog posts and research pieces
♂️♂️♂️ mastered the art of the helpful and earnest pass email
and sourced three of our most promising investments
Nate brings a stoic calm to our team culture (balancing out some of my mania) while still managing to post the most envy-inducing hiking and cooking photos in our weekly team photo chat.
He's incredibly self motivated and diligent; I know when we agree he's taking on a project that it will get done, and I can fully trust him to prioritize on the fly and proactively ask for advice.
He's never above pitching in to help [Jen Haller](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAABC9O4Bkw79nAeiWQWMSMiHbifPHCLjhrw) and [Thomas Stahura](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAABlUzzMB-Qd9Fu7AIWmT9Ek8JbUF6zeteZE) with their work, and he's a fixture at events across the ecosystem.
I'll often ask where he met a founder I hadn't heard of yet, and the answer is usually "we walked home from happy hour", or "we went on a hike last weekend".
Nate lives this job in the best way possible and I can't wait to watch him continue to grow and scale new peaks with us here on our third fund and beyond.

OK people, here's the motherload:
An end-to-end, no-BS guide to creating a strategy that actually works.
These are the pieces that really count, and you won't find them laid out this simple anywhere else:
1. The New Value
(The whole point of your business)
2. The Key Innovation
(Where real differentiation comes from)
3. The Customer Story
(How to sell it)
4. The Company Story
(How to lead with it)
--- in sum, we're talking about a blueprint for an unstoppable beast.
Make sure you:
Save this for later
Follow and hit the bell for more like it

[WHOOP](https://www.linkedin.com/company/whoop/) released their v2 API... so you know I had to compare the data against my tennis data!
This summer I set a goal to achieve a 7 UTR. If you don't play tennis, it's basically the line in the sand between "really good, bad tennis player" and "really bad, good tennis player". If you're a 7 UTR, you can definitely play college tennis somewhere.
I didn't play college tennis. I picked up tennis about 2 years ago and was super lucky to go to the [(USTA) United States Tennis Association](https://www.linkedin.com/company/usta/) Nationals earlier this year. I lost in the QF to the overall winner, but it got me thinking...
❓ What would it take for me to get to the next level? Take a guess at the predicted timeline before we jump into the data!
So a quick background for my non-tennis fiends. Playing college tennis is no joke. A lot of kids grow up playing either in a "high performance academy" or even a sleepaway facility. They do school part time, and play tennis full time. The #1 Men's ATP player, Jannik Sinner, started tennis late... at 13.
Basically, adult tennis players != kids who grew up playing tennis
Tennis is filled with complicated physical movements, from the serve to the footwork. It's considered one of the most physically demanding sports in terms of fitness. And, it's pretty expensive
It's time, money, and energy. But how much exactly?? Well, that's what my WHOOP + match data answers! Here are the takeaways:
If I play more tennis, I have an almost equivalent ratio increase in recovery and support fitness (think: mobility, strength).
Playing isn't everything. I spent a significant amount of time just thinking/reviewing/shadowing tennis, like when my friend [Douglas Hochmuth](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAACPmbrEBWFofuQI8xQgQg81Wd_hvXwSrL3I) reviewed my forehand in the app [Onform](https://www.linkedin.com/company/onform-app/)!
➕ If I have to play 2 matches in a day, I need to be playing 4 hours+ a day for a few weeks in order for my body to be adapted enough
♀️ 3-5 days of max tennis is my current physical limit. That 6th day is absolute bed rot for me.
So what would it take for me to get to a 7 UTR? The statistical prediction is... ~6 months. Not too bad! Metrics aside, there's a lot of qualitative data points that are also very fun:
1.) I went undefeated in my USTA league singles matches this season
2.) I served above 90 mph for the first time in my life
3.) I played in an ITA tournament against active college players this summer
____
If you're still reading this, excellent. I've trapped you. I also wanted to let you know that Doug and I are building public tennis courts in Philadelphia! I wrote about this previously, but there's just not enough public infrastructure in our city to support my addiction to fluffy yellow balls. If you'd like to be updated on our tennis + city infrastructure journey, comment a tennis pun below released their v2 API... so you know I had to compare the data against my tennis data!

It always blows my mind how quickly things can change.
On March 11, 2020, my cofounder [David Zeng](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAAmDqKoBlh9VP-SNSut0WkSVMQb9-rVFaAI) defended his AI PhD in person at Stanford. Here’s [Neal Jean](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAAFfzmQBp2_SH1zokWsea-gX1JGWfn3PDY4) taking a picture of David with his defense committee.
The next day, Thursday, our little team of four cofounders living together went to Costco to stock up on COVID supplies. There were no carts left. Lines spanned half the length of the store.
On Friday, Trump declared a national state of emergency.
In 72 hours, the world tipped into a new era.
We’re seeing the same thing now with AI. What used to take months — building a website, doing research, standing up an app — now happens in minutes with the right agent.
It’s not just fast. It’s a different tempo entirely.
Hopefully Costco doesn’t run out of toilet paper this time though. It always blows my mind how quickly things can change.

My old employer, Indeed, cut 16% of its workforce last week (around 1,500 people).
I know for a fact it wasn't performance-related -- there were people on PIPs who survived, and those with perfect performance reviews who didn't -- and entire teams of 5-100 were laid off.
Also, a few of the most talented people I personally worked with -- people who were on my list to poach for my startup as soon as I could afford to! -- are now on the market.
Some of them were experimenting with LLM-enabled features back in early 2023 when OpenAI put out the first ChatGPT API, then figuring out what it took to deploy them responsibly at scale, and recently navigating the wild wild west of bringing vibe coding to a corporate environment. Some of them previously came from FAANGs. A couple of them were on the founding team of startups you and I have both heard of (and whose products we use). Some of them came from different industries or aren't in technical roles at all, but are equally talented and just as much of a mistake to let go of IMO.
I can't afford them yet unfortunately, so my loss is your gain.
If you're hiring, let me know for what, and I promise that if I have anyone to endorse for your role it will not be a waste of your time.My old employer, Indeed, cut 16% of its workforce last week (around 1,500 people).

Very much appreciate the shout out and visibility cast on the recent layoff as I was one of the many let go.
I can confirm that largely the group I personally know an were laid off are exactly as described above, smart, ambitious, and seemingly randomly selected. It is also worth mentioning that it came out of seemingly NOWHERE and any reach out/contact lights up my day and I'm sure the same can be said for my former teammates. One of the greatest joys of my Placeholder journey has been the conversations with people in the Placeholder. [Jason Shen](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAACiJH0Bf6JRdYLxXhn-GY7Wttf006lff68) is one of them. He's the "expert" in the Placeholder.
Jason is a writer and executive coach. Helping out many startup founders as a coach is one of many experiments he has run so far. Previously, he founded three venture-backed startups & led product teams at Etsy and Meta. He is a Y Combinator alum (S11), and NCAA mens gymnastics national champion. You can tell he likes trying new stuff, but it’s not that he was born with it.
Jason and I met at Meta while we’re both in each of our own Placeholder phases, which we didn’t know back then . In this Placeholder Interview, Jason shared six important insights about how he navigated ambiguity and vulnerability of his Placeholder with social support, courage, and resilience.
1. The Placeholder Is Not a One-Time Phase—It’s Ongoing and Multi-Dimensional
2. Change Tolerance is a Skill, not just a Trait.
3. Fear of Looking Wrong or Foolish: Why We Resist the Placeholder
4. Quitting is an Underrated Skill
5. Being Seen During Change is a Vulnerable but Necessary Part of Growth
6. You Cannot Change Alone.
